All Ceylon Health Services Union (ACHSU) General Secretary Gamini Kumarasinghe yesterday alleged that Sabaragamuwa Province Health Minister Banu Munipriya had appointed more than 200 of his supporters three days prior to the dissolution of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council.
The appointments were illegal because some had been appointed as casual attendants, though there was no such post in the Health Ministry’s cadre.
The governor of the Sabaragamuwa Province, Chief Minister Maheepala Herath and Provincial Health Minister were responsible for the ‘illegal’ appointments made at the eleventh hour, Kumarasinghe said. When contacted Sabaragamuwa province Health Minister’s Coordinating Secretary Lalith Priyantha Kumara Jayabandu dismissed the allegations made by the ACHSU. The Sabaragamuwa Health Ministry had never appointed 200 persons to fill unnecessary vacancies, he said. Unlike the Central Government’s Health Ministry, the hospitals under the provincial administration had different types of vacancies, he said, adding that as the ministry had 23 vacancies they had been advertised. Then those appointments were made to fill the existing vacancies, he said.
