UN, too, condemns raid on Lanka Mirror and Lanka X news websites

The United Nations yesterday expressed concern over the recent raid on the offices of the Lanka Mirror and UNP website Lanka X news websites and the arrest of nine employees.

UN Secretary General’s spokesman Martin Nesirky told a news conference that the UN was aware that such a raid had taken place.

"And as we’ve said in many other cases, not just with regard to this country, journalists need to be able to do their work without interference.  And that’s the general principle and it applies in this case, too," he said.

The European Union and the US, too, condemned the raid.

UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera said that Fundamental Rights applications would be filed by him against last Friday’s arrest of nine employees attached to the UNP’s official website, Sri Lankaxnews and Lanka mirror.

The MP said that both websites were in operation, though the government announced their suspension.
