NFF sees local and foreign conspiracy

Some local and international parties were trying to destroy the country’s sovereignty and create ethnic conflict in the North again by urging the government to hold the Northern provincial council elections soon, National Freedom Front (NFF) Central Committee Member Piyasiri Wijenayake said.

Addressing the media yesterday (06) at the NFF headquarters at Battaramulla, Wijenayake requested the government to implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution without the police and land powers.

He stressed that the police and land powers should remain with the central government. "Once those two powers were granted, they might then have the key ingredients for claiming a separate state. Implementation of full 13th Amendment is exactly what the LTTE fought for," he added.

"We must not forget that the country’s armed forces made supreme sacrifices to preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. If land and police powers are given to the provinces, the supreme sacrifices that they made may become in vain," he said.

The government was under enormous pressure, locally and internationally, to create a federal system. All people of the country must support the government in its endeavour to preserve the country’s unitary status, he said.

"People in North only expect assistance from the government to enhance their living standards by solving their problems and they do not expect elections. Currently, the government is conducting a large number of development programmes in the North. Some foreign countries, NGOs and their supportive groups in Sri Lanka try to disturb the prevailing peaceful situation in the North." he said.

He also said that the NFF would contest the North-Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provincial Council Elections with the UPFA, with the objective of defeating all local and foreign separatists.
