The Central Committee of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party will meet tonight to take some crucial decisions, including whether to accept the condition put forward by the SLMC to contest under the UPFA Banner and Betel leaf symbol at the forthcoming election to the Eastern Provincial Council, SLFP sources said yesterday.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa would preside over the meeting to be held at Temple Trees commencing at 7.00 p.m., Administrative Secretary of the SLFP S. H. Ariyasena said yesterday.
Sources also confirmed that the President would have to take the tough but bitter final decision on whether the Party would grant nomination to kith and kin of Cabinet Ministers and their deputies as demanded.
The three senior vice presidents of the SLFP, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, who Chaired the Party Nomination Board for the Sabragamuwa Province, Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, the Eastern Province and Minister W. D. J. Seneviratmne, the North-Central Province, who personally processed over 3,000 applications and interviewed prospective candidates would submit their recommendation to the President.
General Secretary of the SLFP Minister Maithripala Sirisena, UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayath and the Party Organizers for the districts where the elections would be held are expected to be present at the mmeeting.
The final outcome of the meeting could make or break the chances of the UPFA winning, especially the Eastern Province, where the government needs to prove to the international community that the masses, especially the minority Tamils and Muslims, were with it even after it had been in power for seven years, Political sources said yesterday.
