A prominent UNP reformist yesterday accused UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and the party media committee head Mangala Samaraweera of covertly planned to field former President Chandrika Bandaranaike as the common candidate at the next presidential election.
Secr-etary of the Movement to Protect the UNP and its Trade Unions, Lal Perera told the media that Wickremasinghe and Samaraweera said the reformists had reliable information about Wickremesinghe’s secret plan.
Perera alleged that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had backed Wickremesinghe in trouble.
The Party Leader was using the Working Committee comprising mostly his loyalists to retain his position though the true UNP supporters vehemently rejected him, the reformist firebrand said.
Referring to mud-slinging websites, Perera praised Pres-ident Raja-paksa and the CID for raiding two websites notorious for tarnishing the images of leading actresses, actors, politicians like former UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, former common presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka and the incumbent UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa and media institutions like Sirasa and Mawbima.
He said that the raids on websites should be regarded as a service done to the public.
