After much haggling among Tamil political parties, the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has secured the lion’s share of the nominations for all three Eastern districts at the forthcoming PC polls.
Well informed Tamil sources told The Sunday Island that EPRLF (Suresh Premachandran faction), PLOTE, TELO (Selvam Adaikalanathan) and TULF had no option but to accept ITAK’s demand for 50 per cent of nominations to prevent a break-up of the Tamil alliance.
They said that they would have to adopt a common strategy regardless of differences, especially in the wake of the SLMC throwing its weight behind the SLFP-led UPFA.
Sources pointed out that as the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) wasn’t a registered political party, it would contest the EP PC poll under the ITAK symbol, house.
Responding to a query, these sources said that the ITAK would receive over 50 per cent of nominations in the Digamadulla, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts.
R. Sampanthan, Mavai Senadhiraja and M. A. Sumanthiran (National List) had represented the TNA at the deliberations which paved the way for agreement on nominations, sources said.
Asked whether the TNA could still win the EP PC poll, sources said that the party remained confident though the government trying to undermine the Opposition.
Asked whether any constituent of the TNA felt that those opposed to the ITAK having 50 per cent of nominations should contest on their own, sources said that wouldn’t be realistic.
With the breakaway LTTE faction, TMVP contesting on the UPFA ticket along with the SLMC, it would be unthinkable on our part to split the Tamil electorate again, sources said.
"We are in the process of finalizing nominations," they said. Nominations opened on July 12 and will close on July 19.
