Officer in hot water over attempt to deceive SLAF Chief

By Norman Palihawadana

The Colombo Magistrate Court on Monday (July 16) released Wing Commander Deepal Munasinghe on surety bail when he was produced in court for allegedly trying to deceive Air Force Commander, Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema.

Investigators said that a person masquerading as MP Namal Rajapaksa had phoned the SLAF chief on behalf of WC Munasinghe and directed him to cancel a transfer given to the officer. Sources said that immediately after receiving the call, the SLAF chief had requested the police to conduct an inquiry. The SLAAF has initiated an internal inquiry into the conduct of the officer, who had been based at a camp in the Vavuniya area at the time of the incident.

The police said that the person who had masqueraded as MP Rajapaksa, too, had been identified and a special team and he would be arrested.
