Two persons who vandalised the Mahatma Gandhi statue, in Jaffna, were arrested by the Jaffna police on Sunday morning.
Sources said that the vandals were arrested on information provided by two eyewitnesses.
According to the eyewitnesses, there had been an argument between two drunken groups and it had developed into fisticuffs, whereupon the two suspects had tried to pull out the walking stick in the hand of the Gandhi statue to attack their opponents. That had caused the statue to fall onto a guard railing resulting in it being damaged.
The incident had occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday (28) and the police acted swiftly to nab the suspects, sources said.
The statue stood at the Community Hall on Ashirvathappan Street at Ariyalai. The place is usually crowded with youth who spend time there after participating in sports. The place is also a popular hangout for drunkards and gamblers.
