Forbidden fruit leads to untimely death

A 38-year old husband stabbed his 35-year-old wife to death in a government hospital at Bathigama, Dikwella, on Monday night, police said.

Police spokesman Superintendent Ajith Rohana said that when the victim Manawela Jayasinghege Thushari Mangalika, a resident of Bathigama West met her untimely end, she had been with her eight-year-old daughter who was being treated at the Batheegama hospital.

The suspect, a mechanic, had come to the hospital around 8.15 pm and stabbed her with a knife at the child’s bed and fled the scene, he said.

The victim had been living with her parents following a family dispute.

Sources said that the victim, a former garment factory worker, had had an illicit affair with one of the suspect’s cousins.
