The Working Committee of the UNP should immediately summon party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and question him on serious allegations made against him by SLFP General-Secretary Maithripala Sirisena on Monday (July 30), at an UPFA propaganda rally in Polonnaruwa, UNP reformists say.
Sirisena aid that Wickremesinghe had undermined Gamini Dissanayake’s Presidential bid in 1994, spokesman for the Society to Protect the UNP and Trade Union Lal Perera said yesterday.
Addressing a media briefing at Rajagiriya, he said that Minister Sirisena had alleged that Wickremesinghe had disclosed to the UPFA candidate the then President Mrs. Chandrika Bandaranaike
Kumaratunga the late Dissanayake’s polls strategy in 1994.
He said that those allegations must be probed by the WC and Wickremesinghe questioned. If found guilty, steps should be taken to remove Wickremasinghe from not only the UNP leadership but also from the party membership.
Perera that it was unfortunate that Gamini Dissanayake had been killed by the LTTE. When the UNP met at Sirikotha to pick a candidate after Dissanayake’s death, Wickremesinghe’s vehicle had to be given a Police escort as the party supporters wanted Ranil ousted and demanded that Gamini’s wife Srima be made the Presidential candidate of the UNP.
Perera said that what Minister Maithripala Sirisena had revealed in Polonnaruwa was correct.
