A no-confidence motion containing 17 charges against Mayor of Colombo A. J. M. Muzammil is to be presented to the Chief Minister of the Western Provincial Council Prasanna Ranatunga in mid August by the UPFA Group in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

UPFA sources told The Island that they would request the Chief Minister to probe charges levelled against Mayor Muzammil and to suspend him if found guilty.

Contempt of Court proceeding were being contemplated against Mayor Muzammil and UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for using the Mayor’s official residence at Greenpath on Wednesday (1), for a discussion conducted by UNP Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam on the Z-Score issue, sources said. That meeting was in violation of a District Court order preventing the UNP or its leader from conducting any meeting at the Mayor’s official residence. Wickremesinghe, too, had been present, according to sources.

The CMC Mace forcibly taken away during a monthly meeting on Monday (July 31) by UPFA Councillor Anura Sujeeva, UPFA has been returned to Commissioner Mrs. Bhadrani Jayawardene.

Mayor Muzammil said that he was not deterred by the no-confidence motion or the contempt of Court proceedings to be brought by the UPFA group.

He said the Mace was not required for Council proceedings though it had been introduced by the UNP when Karu Jayasuriya was the Mayor.
