UPFA member of the Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Mawathagamage Roshan Perera and four others were remanded till August 7 when produced before Chilaw Magistrate on Thursday for forcibly removing a lorry and its driver from police custody.
Police said that the lorry driver, who was arrested for transporting sand without a permit and the lorry too, had been seized by a special raiding unit of the Puttalum police on Thursday, but a group of men had obstructed the road while the suspect was being taken to the police and rescued him by force.
However, a Chilaw police team led by an Inspector sprang into action and arrested the main suspect who carried out the daring rescue and also remanded the driver of the lorry.
Asked how the suspects managed to rescue the driver and the lorry from police custody, he said that the policemen were not able to resist as the police team that arrested the driver comprised only three men.
With the arrest of main suspects in the incident, another two suspects too surrendered to the Court, he said.
They are to be produced before an identification parade at the Chilaw Magistrate Court on August 7.
