By Hemantha Randunu

The Colombo Crimes Division has rounded up an organized gang that abducted an employee of a big garage in Colombo and tortured him for two days, as the owner of the establishment had suspected the man of stealing his wife’s gold necklace worth Rs 500,000.

Unable to get any information from the victim, who had been tortured in a top floor room of a four-storey building by his abductors, they had finally admitted him to the Accident Service of the Colombo National Hospital on the third day. They had threatened the victim to tell the hospital he sustained the injuries after falling at a party.

The victim from Grandpass after being discharged from the hospital had gone to the IGP’s Relief Centre and complained about his ordeal. DIG Colombo S. A. D. S. Gunawardena there upon had activated CCD Superintendent R. L. Ranaweera to round up the culprits.

A CCD team, headed by Inspector A. Sarath, who probed into the incident, arrested the garage owner, who masterminded the abduction, on Monday along with several other suspects. The victim had worked in that garage for about ten years.

Two other suspects, including a brother of a Deputy Mayor of a local body in a Colombo suburb, are also to be arrested in this connection.
