More on ‘appachichi’August 17, 2012, 9:21 pm
With reference to Mr Upali S. Jayasekera’s letter in The Island on 16 Aug, I first encountered the use of the word ‘appa(o)chichi’ in the 1950s, when my family lived for a while in the home of the historian Dr Vimalananda Tennekoon, on the Peradeniya university campus. His children addressed him by this term. I can hardly believe that Dr Vim (as we called him) would have been unaware of the roots of the word. Interesting?
