White Eggs and Brown Eggs —Which is healthier?August 17, 2012, 9:23 pm
Many health conscious people choose to buy brown eggs over white eggs. Are they really a healthier choice or are you wasting money on dark eggs. There is always a misbelieve that "gam kukulas eggs" or "natu koli muttai" and brown eggs are superior and healthier than the white eggs.
Brown eggs get their pigmented shell from a substance called protoporphyin which is a substance derived from hemoglobin. This pigment is naturally laid down as the egg is formed. The determination of the eggs colour as white and brown are exclusively determined by the breed of chicken it comes from. To add to the confusion, there are even chickens that lay pastel coloured eggs.
Although some eggs may be appealing from a colour standpoint than others, the reality is that brown eggs and "gam kukulas eggs" or ‘natu koli muttai’ have no real health advantage over white eggs. Each average sized egg immaterial of its origin and size is dense with 5.6 grams protein with essential amino acids, 2.4 gms. monounsaturated fatty acids, 12 minerals inclusive of trace minerals like selenium, zinc and 11 vitamins. For the budget minded shopper might stick with the white ones since brown eggs offer no health benefits and taste difference.
