Treasure hunters vandalise temple

Four suspects allegedly excavated a dagoba, destroyed Buddha statues and robbed treasure at the Peellawela Temple, in Weeraketiya, have been arrested by the Hungama police. According to the police, there a monk from a temple in Dompe among the suspects. They had committed the theft after tying up a caretaker of the temple on the night of July 01. A special police team on the instructions of the Tangalle SP, arrested the suspects at Domple and Gajanayakagama in Weeraketiya on August 14. The police have recovered from the suspects a number of stolen items, including an 18 inch Buddha Statue, two relic caskets and the van used by the suspects. Produced before the Angunakolapelessa Magistrate, the suspects were remanded till August 28. They are to be presented at an identification parade.
