Munaweera and Danajaya in World T-20 squad
New selection formula introduced!August 23, 2012, 12:00 pm

Sri Lanka’s three-member cricket selection panel yesterday introduced a new formula for picking players for the national team. Under-fire Chamara Kapugedara was picked to play India soon after he had made back-to-back ducks for Sri Lanka ‘A’ but after he had smashed five sixes in an innings to win a game for his franchise in the ongoing SLPL tournament, he found no room in Sri Lanka’s World T-20 squad that was named yesterday.
There was also contradiction in the selection of young Akila Dananjaya in the 15-man squad. For the national selectors, the 19-year-old off-spinner wasn’t good enough a few weeks ago to play in the Under-19 World Cup in Australia, but he seems fit enough to play against the likes of Chris Gayle, Jacques Kallis, M. S. Dhoni and Shahid Afridi at the ICC T20 World Cup!
Along with Dananjaya, hard-hitting top-order batsman Dilshan Munaweera (23) finds himself in the squad. While Dananjaya is a student at Mahanama Vidyalaya, Panadura, Munaweera turns up for Bloomfield in domestic cricket. Munaweera had won the Single Wicket Tournament conducted by SLC earlier.
Sri Lanka left out opening batsman Upul Tharanga, spinners Sachithra Senanayake, seamers Isuru Udana and Nuwan Pradeep for the fourth edition of the World T-20. The tournament will be competed by 16 teams and gets underway on the 18th of September at Hambantota with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe playing the curtain raiser.
Spinner Ajantha Mendis, who has been away from action since being injured in January this year also makes a comeback to the side while Shaminda Eranga, who featured in the only T-20 International against India also has been named in the squad.
Former Captain Kumar Sangakkara, who fractured the little finger of his right-hand and missed the last four games against India, has been ruled fit. Nuwan Kulasekara, who hurt his groin during the first ODI against India at Hambantota, is also back in the squad.
