The Colombo High Court yesterday handed down the death sentence to Johnson Collin Valentine convicted of the assassination of UNP parliamentarian Thiyagarajah Maheswaran.

The accused was found guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. While passing the death sentence, High Court Judge Sunil Rajapaksa acquitted the accused of the second charge of shooting other persons.

Valentine had been indicted by the Attorney General for the murder of MP Maheswaran and shooting several others.

Delivering the judgment, High Court Judge Sunil Rajapaksa said that the DNA reports had confirmed that the accused used the pistol with which the MP was killed. Eye witness accounts and circumstantial evidence also proved the accused guilty.

Accordingly, the death sentence was handed down and the convict would be hanged to death on a date decided by the President, Judge Rajapaksa said.

State Counsel Thushara Kumara appeared for prosecution. Attorney-at-Law S. Jeyakumar appeared for the accused.
