A phalanx of lawyers appeared in defence of Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen who was yesterday enlarged on bail by Mannar Magistrate Ranga Dassanayake.

Bail was set at cash in Rs 10,000 with two sureties of Rs. 250,000 each.

Bathiudeen appeared before Court in answer to summons issued in respect of a case where he was alleged to have threatened the previous Mannar Magistrate, Anthonypillai Judeson, with death, in an attempt to get him to reverse an order.

The Judicial Service Commission appointed Magistrate Dissanayake to hear the case as former Magistrate Judeson was the complainant.

A total of 23 lawyers – 18 from Colombo - led by a President’s Counsel represented Bathiudeen while the other five were from Mannar.

Also present were four Counsel from the Attorney General’s Department. The Bar Association is also playing a major role as it sees the incident as a threat to the independence of the judiciary.

A massive crowd was present to see whether the Minister would present himself in Court in answer to the summons. That caused the authorities to tighten security not only around the Court complex but also throughout the Mannar town. Police, the Special Task Force and contingents of security forces personnel were deployed to maintain security.
