A vehicle carrying the security contingent of UPFA parliamentarian Roshan Ranasinghe yesterday morning crashed into a three wheeler at Jayanthipura, Polonnaruwa, killing one woman and injuring four others, including a five-year-old boy.

Police said even though the jeep had been travelling at an excessive speed when the crash occurred at about 7:30 a.m. it was not accompanying the Polonnaruwa District parliamentarian.

The deceased was identified as Chandani Guneratne and those injured and admitted to Polonnaruwa hospital were Chaminda Senaratne (driver), Sudath Bandara, Asoka Chandralatha, and Shivantha Keheliya (5).

The five-member group, in the three wheeler, was proceeding to Polonnaruwa from Aralaganwila when the MP’s security vehicle coming from Polonnaruwa crashed into it. Area residents rushed to the scene and dispatched the injured to the hospital.

The police arrested the driver of the MP’s security vehicle and he was due to be produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate.
