Trade and Commerce Minister Johnston Fernando said that the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) had purchased 5,105 tonnes of paddy during the current season. The government had allocated Rs. 10.7 million to purchase the stock.

He said that harvests from Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa were coming in at the moment. Although large harvests of paddy were not expected in the foreseeable future, due to the prolonged drought in those areas, some stocks of paddy could be expected after two weeks.

Minister Fernando added that about 90 PMB stores had been emptied to collect the paddy. He would make every effort to protect the paddy farmer and was ready to purchase quality paddy.
