PC poll: Campaigning ends midnight Wednesday

Political campaigning for the September 8 PC poll in the three provinces will end by midnight on Wednesday (5).

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is scheduled to address a rally in the Batticaloa district tomorrow and in Kantale on Tuesday followed by rallies in the Akkaraipattu town on Wednesday and the final meeting in Dehiattakandiya town the same evening, political sources said.

The General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said yesterday that the party would conclude its campaigning in the East with a rally addressed by party leader Rani Wickremesinghe in Ampara today.

He said that all the party seniors including Deputy Leader of the UNP Sajith Premadasa, MP and National Organizer Daya Gamage were scheduled to address the final rallies .

Wickremesinghe isscheduled to address a rally in Ratnapura and Kegalle on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP) will celebrate its 61st anniversary presided by Wickremasinghe on Saturday, September 6 at the Party Headquarters Siri Kotha on a religious note.

All Party district and electorate organizers who have contributed towards the development of the oarty would be felicitated on this occasion.

The party would also decide on how best it could commemorate the enormous sacrifices made by three UNP General Secretary Harsha Abeywardena, Nandalal Fernando and Ranjan Wijeratne, slain by terrorists whilst holding office, party sources said.

The Propaganda Secretary of the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said that party leader Somawansa Amarasinghe would preside over the final rallies today. There will be a meeting at Polonnaruwa.

On Tuesday, the final rally would be held in Anuradhapura town. JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva, politburo members Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Lal Kantha, MPs, and Anuradhapura district leader ex-MP Vasantha Samarasinghe are scheduled to address the meeting.
