Police seize 107,000 cannabis plants inside forest reserve

Police seized 107,000 cannabis plants following a raid on a three and a half acre ganja plantation in the Aluthwela, Diyabethma forest reserve recently.

The stock was valued at around Rs. 7.5 million. Two persons who had in their possession 270 kilos of dried ganja leaves were arrested from the plantation during the swoop down.

The two suspects were later produced before Bandarawela Magistrate Aruna Wickremasinghe and fined Rs. 50,000 each.

The Magistrate directed the stock of dried ganja leaves be handed over the State Ayurveda Corporation.

The raid was conducted on a tip off received by the Bandarawela Anti Vice Squad. Bandarawela SSP Jagathchandra Kumara directed the operation under the supervision of SP (1) Y. G. R. M. Rifard and SP (11) W. M. J. B. Wijayaratne. The raiding party comprised Anti Vice Squad OIC IP Abeysinghe, PS Nayananda, PS Mahinda and PCs Gunatilleka, Ravindra, Chaminda, Kapila, Nilantha and Adhikari.
