Acting on representations made by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to the Attorney General’s department, the Colombo High Court yesterday froze property, vehicles and cash belonging to a notorious drug dealer, identified as ‘Badowita Wele Suda.’
Authorities estimated the value of the seized property at Rs. 200mn.
The CID, investigating smuggling of heron into the country, recently arrested Suda’s wife, who returned from India using a forged passport. Sources said that the woman had led investigators to a gang of drug dealers who operated from a luxury apartment in Colombo. The raiding party arrested five persons and recovered a stock of heroin.
The police said that several luxury vehicles, too, had been recovered. Meanwhile, the Maligakanda Court yesterday disallowed an application for bail for the suspects, including ‘Wele Suda’s’ wife.
Sources said that ‘Wele Suda’ had fled the country.
