A 68-year-old lawyer was hammered to death, early yesterday morning, by his 21-year-old mistress, who was living with him in a house at Athurugiriya.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the lawyer, Wilson Jayawardene, had been stabbed by his mistress following a dispute. They had been living in the house for six months.

The woman was arrested by the police and would be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate today (8).

The lawyer was a married man whose wife and children were living separately. According to the suspect’s confession to the police, she had been treated like a prisoner by the lawyer.

He had not allowed her to even answer the phone or go out alone. Her elderly lover had accompanied her wherever she went and the couple had purchased meals from restaurants daily.

She had said that the lawyer had bitten her on the back and she had then hit him with a hammer and pushed him off the upper floor. When he had fallen she had hit him repeatedly in the head.

Earlier, when the Athurigiriya police inquired about the killing from the young woman, she had said that unknown assailants had come to the house and knocked on the door. When the lawyer opened the door, he had been stabbed to death, she claimed.

But, the police felt suspicious as the rented house at No. 4, Jayagath Mawatha, Hokandara North, Athurigiriya was surrounded by high walls. They arrested the woman as they found blood inside the house.
