‘UPFA will control EPC’

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will form the Eastern Provincial Council soon and the composition of the Council would be known by today, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the weekly post-Cabinet news conference yesterday.

When it was pointed out that nothing seemed to be happening in the area of electoral reforms, despite announcements made during the last three years, and asked why, the Minister said: "There are two schools of thought. Some say that electoral reforms are necessary while others say that they are not. There is also concern that there should be provisions for the minority parties also to be represented in Parliament. There are some areas that are contentious to the minority parties but those could be resolved. The government hopes to work in such a manner that consensus could be arrived at by all political parties."
