Big onion farmers’ plight highlighted at CPC meeting

KANDY: The plight of big onion farmers in Dambulla has been aggravating. Steps should be taken to prevent the farmer community from falling into a worse situation. It has become of paramount importance for the Central Provincial Minister of Agriculture to visit Dambulla to gain first hand information on the big onion farmer, said UNP member of the Central Provincial Council Sanjeewa Kaviratne.

With these remarks Sanjeewa Kaviratne invited the Central Provincial Agriculture Minister Nimal Piyatissa to visit the Dambulla big onion cultivators.

Disclosing the situation face by the big onion cultivators, Kaviratne said that the cultivators were facing heavy losses.

The meeting was chaired by Provincial Council Chairman Saliya Bandara Dissanayake.

The Deputy Chairman of the Council W. Yasamana, UPFA member from the Matale district, revealing the sad plight of the Dambulla big onion cultivator, said that the farmer was was unable to sell a kilo of big onions at even Rs. 55.00.

Yasamana said that relief for the farmer was a dire need and price of a kilo of the commodity should be raised to at least Rs. 65.00.

Chairman Saliya Bandara Dissanayake responded saying that the matter would be forwarded to the Provincial Agriculture Minister.
