Four killed on expressway under construction

Four persons, including two policemen and a Chinese national, died in the early hours of yesterday when the vehicle they were travelling in fell into crater full of water at the Thunandahena worksite in Athurugiriya, on the Kottawa-Kadawatha expressway under construction.

The deceased were police constables Asanka and Dhanuka, a Chinese employee of the company constructing the expressway,

Shahue Chun and A. Sumeda, the driver of the vehicle.

According to the police, the two policemen had been patrolling the work site with the company employee as a number of thefts had been reported there.

The accident had occurred as they were entering the site.

The police said that the vehicle had fallen into a huge crater dug to place the pilings for a fly over on the expressway.

"The vehicle had got stuck in the mud after plunging into the crater.

The Athurugiriya police had rushed to the scene of the accident and extricated those stuck inside the vehicle but by then they were all dead. a senior officer said.
