Court issues notice on Galle Mayor

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Galle Magistrate has issued notice on Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva to appear before Court on October 24, 2012.

Issuing the notice, the Magistrate warned that failure to appear in Court on the said date would result in an arrest warrant being issued, the GMOA said yesterday. The GMOA said that the charges framed against the Mayor were obstructing the duties of Galle Municipal Council MoH Dr. Venura Singarachchi, criminal intimidation, attempted assault and using abusive language on him.

GMOA Assistant Secretary Dr. Nath Wijesuriya said that although MoH Singarachchi had complained to the Galle police, no action had been taken against the Mayor.

He said it was obvious that under Section 486 of the Penal Code, MoH Dr. Singarachchi had been criminally intimidated; under Section 183, Mayor Silva had obstructed a public servant who was discharging his duties and under the Section 344 of the the mayor had attempted to assault Dr. Singarachchi.

Dr. Wijesuriya added that as far as the GMOA was concerned, the letter sent by the then Senior DIG Lalith Jayasinghe to the Attorney General requesting legal advice had been ignored.

Galle SSP Vas Gunawardena, contacted for comment, said he was aware that notice had been issued on the Mayor.
