Patients suffering from eye complications in the Elpitiya area will be left high and dry as the only eye surgeon there will be transferred to some other area with effect from January 2013.
The Elpitiya Base hospital’s Medical Superintendent had requested the Health Authorities to send a replacement, only to be informed that the eye surgeons attached to the Balapitiya and Karapitiya hospitals would visit the Elpitiya hospital, a doctor, on condition of anonymity, said.
He said that patients seeking treatment for the eye complications and the patients scheduled for eye surgery would be in trouble when the present eye surgeon leaves the Elpitiya hospital.
The Elpitiya Base hospital eye care unit was on the verge of closure as no replacement has been made.
When contacted, the Elpitiya hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr. Muditha Amarasinghe said that he had informed the Secretary to the Health Ministry to send a replacement, but the request had fallen on deaf ears.
He pointed out that the present eye surgeon had been performing about 20 surgeries per day, including cataract surgery. "What will happen is that all the eye surgeries will come to a grinding halt when the surgeon leaves. I have already requested the Secretary to the Health Ministry for a replacement, but according to him, the eye doctors attached to the Balapitiya and the Karapitiya hospitals will cover Elpitiya," Dr.Amarasinghe said.
