Crude oil sufficient for only two days

By Ravi Ladduwahetty

Operations at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s Sapugaskanda Refinery will come to a standstill very soon as the stocks of crude oil available there are sufficient for only another two days!

Sources told The Island last night that the shortage was due to a delay in the arrival of parcels of crude in Colombo.

They attributed the shortage to the import of Arabian crude in place of Iranian Light crude. The refinery would suffer huge losses when the crude stocks run out as it would have to be closed, they added.

All our efforts to contact the authorities were in vain. When we tried to reach Minister Susil Premajayantha, we were told that he  was at a pirith ceremony and could not be disturbed. Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena, Ministry Secretary Dr. R.H.S. Samaratunga, CPC Chairman Tilak Collure and Vice Chairman Susantha Silva were not available for comment

When contacted last night Ceylon Petroleum Corporation’s Sapugaskanda Refinery Manager Neil Jayasekera said that there were adequate supplies but declined to mention the amount!
