Driving license applications online

The country’s entire driving license service system will be brought under one network soon.

Motor Traffic Department Commissioner General S. H. Harischandra told The Island yesterday (11), that a new online system to apply for driving licenses would be introduced at districts level, in order to provide a more efficient, productive and people friendly service.

He said, "the new method is currently being implemented in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and Werahera districts, while measures are underway to extend the service to other districts as well."

According to the Motor Traffic Department, around 150 new drivers enter the roads every hour in Sri Lanka. The department had issued 133,767 new driving licenses from January 1 to May 31 this year.

Accordingly, an average of 26,754 new driving licences are issued monthly while 1,216 new driving licenses are issued daily except on Saturdays and Sundays.

A total of 273,443 driving licenses, including those seeking renewal and an extension of were issued in the past five months.

Meanwhile, 608 licenses of errant drivers had been canceled due to various offences in the first five months of this year.
