Fund in aid of rebuilding destroyed B’desh Buddhist shrines

KANDY: A fund to assist the reconstruction of Buddhist places of worship in Bangladesh was launched in Kandy last Wednesday under the patronage of Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.
Mahanayake of Asgiriya Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera made the first contribution to the fund with a donation of Rs. 100,000.
Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela informed that a contribution of one million rupees would be made by Sri Dalada Maligawa.
Mahanayake of Malwatte Tibbatuwawe Ven. Sri Siddharatha Sumangala Thera informed Governor Kobbekaduwa that the matter would be discussed at a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Sanga and a decision taken with regard to the contribution to the fund.
Governor Kobbekaduwa presiding at the inaugural meeting of the fund, said that it would raise contributions to assist the reconstruction of 15 Buddhist shrines destroyed in Bangladesh.
The fund had been established with the blessings of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the most Venerable Mahanayake Theras of Malwatte and Asgiriya, he said.
Financial contributions towards the restoration of the destroyed Buddhist shrines would be made available to the relevant parties undertaking the task through the Foreign Ministry and the Sri Lanka Embassy in Bangladesh, the governor said adding that the financial transactions would be transparent.
Special accounts have been opened for that purpose. They are: People’s Bank, Kandy A/C No. 003100190046543 and Bank of Ceylon Super-grade Branch, Kandy Savings Account No. 37877990.
