Two employees of Unawatuna Beach Resort (UBR), returning on a motorcycle from a bank in Galle, with Rs. 1.5 million, were robbed at gun point by two unidentified gunmen, near the Timber Corporation depot at Unawatuna yesterday afternoon.

Police spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told The Island that the robbers had followed the two employees of the UBR, who went to private bank to draw money to pay employees’ salaries. On their way back to the UBR, they had been robbed at gun point around 3.00 p.m.

SSP Jayakody said that the Galle police were probing the robbery. When asked whether there had been people around when the robbery took place, he said that no one had dared to intervene as the robbers were armed.

Asked whether the robbers were wearing masks, he answered in the negative.

It might have been a toy pistol that the robbers used, but the investigations have yet to ascertain those details or to identify the robbers, the police said.
