Priyantha Sirisena, brother of UPFA General Secretary and Minister, Maithripala Sirisena, was remanded yesterday till October 30 by the Polonnaruwa Magistrate for an alleged arson attack on the Jalagalum Nimna Wildlife Office at Manampitiya.
According to Wildlife Department sources Priyantha allegedly stormed the Wildlife Office on October 05 with a group of supporters and after threatening the officers there, opened its safe and set fire to some files. Before leaving the place the gang had also damaged two motorcycles parked there and threatened officials with death..
The police spokesman told The Island that the Wildlife officers had lodged a complaint against the minister’s brother a few days back at the Polonnaruwa police and claimed that he did not know the exact date of the entry lodged by them as he had been overseas at the time.
However, the minister’s brother had surrendered to the Polonnaruwa police over the alleged offence yesterday, he said.
