Ranil planning to  suspend rebels to appoint his own

By Lal Gunasekera

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s plan to suspend all party members who attend today’s (18) massive anti-government rally, at Hyde Park, is to prevent those UNP politicians from attending the illegal Party convention scheduled for December 1 at Sirikotha, UNP reformists said yesterday.

Speaking at a media briefing in Rajagiriya, Lal Perera of the Movement to Protect the UNP and its Trade Unions, said that the anti-government rally, organized by the National Bhikku Front (NBF), is against the Executive Presidency and for the return of law and order to the country. He said that their rally has nothing to do with projecting General Sarath Fonseka as a political leader or forming another political party, but a move aimed at ousting the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime from power.

He said that the UNP leader had appointed a committee to select the UNPers who will attend the proposed party convention in December and by that keep out those members who want changes in the UNP constitution. He said that the UNP reformists were discussing this matter at length and may even seek legal intervention.

Wickremesinghe’s plan for the so called Party Convention is to get Daya Gamage elected as the Deputy Leader and Ravi Karunanayake as National Organiser, Lal Perera said adding that it was a move to oust the Present Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa.
