KANDY: No person or political party leader could prevent anyone from attending any meeting organised by any person or group, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayaka Thera of Asgiriya, told the United National Party Parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya yesterday (17).

Jayasuriya, calling on the Mahanayaka Thera, said that he called on the prelate to obtain advice prior to attending the Hyde Park meeting of the Eksath Bhikshu Peramuna.

Buddharakkitha Mahanayaka Thera said that no one could object to a person attending any meeting at his will. No party leader could raise objection to a person attending a meeting.

The prelate said, a member of a party cannot be shackled by anyone and it is not possible to keep a person by force.

However, the prelate, recalling the recent past of MP Karu Jayasuriya said, "you were at one time with the government. Had you continued to remain with the government you could have been at a very good place. But you returned to your party. It is not reasonable for your party to now to ill-treat you."

Most Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera of Malwatta stressed the need for unity in the party as well in the entire political arena for the benefit of the country.

The prelate said that politician when in power did not keep to their promises given before coming to power.

The UNP in its policy statement, a few years ago, had said that the Executive Presidency and the preferential voting system were not suitable to the country, the prelate recalled.

Jayasuriya told both prelate that he visited them to receive their advice before attending meeting of the Eksath Bhikku Peramuna.

He said he would seek the advice of the other religious leaders and his friends.

MPs Range Bandara and Asanga Abeysinghe, former Kandy Mayor Harindra Dunuwila and former Provincial Education Ministry Secretary Palitha Elkaduwa and Ven. Thalpath Dhammajothi Thera were present.
