Ten men to be charged with cruelty to animals

KANDY – Ududumbara Police, in night operations last Tuesday and Wednesday arrested ten men transporting 67-head of cattle, packed like sardine, in six lorries .
The police said the cattle were transported having obtained permits but without adequate room for the animals. Hence the suspects would be charged for cruelty to animals, police said.
The animals and the lorries were taken into police custody pending a Court order.
The suspects would be produced before the Teldeniya Magistrate Courts police said.
The detections were made at a point on the Mahiyangana-Kandy road, police said adding that the animals were being supplied to butchers in Kandy, Digana and Wattegama.
Raids were conducted by a team led by OIC, Ududumbara police, Inspector Kapila Dissanayake on the directions of senior DIG, HNB Ambanwala DIG G. B. Peramune, SSP R. Ganegama and ASP, T. M. U. Tennakoon.
Sergeants, Abeykoon (62110), Abeysinghe (12713) Alahakoon (29024) and PC Gunasekera (47156) were the other members of the police team that made the detection.
