The SLFP yesterday said it had decided to appoint a committee to monitor all its local government members and would also maintain a personal file on each such member elected under the new first-past-the-post system.

SLFP General Secretary Minister Maithripala Sirisena said that genuine candidates could not get elected under the previous system, because only candidates with bags of money were voted to power.

Minister Sirisena said that a genuine candidate who was aspiring to become a local government member, but did not have money, could not succeed.

He said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) had recently decided to to maintain a personal file on each of its local government members, because some members had tarnished the image of the party.

A member’s track record, appointments, the date of SLFP membership registration, disciplinary action taken against him or her, his/her involvement in party activities and the loyalty towards the party would be recorded in the file, the Minister added.
