Sri Lanka won the Plate Championship for the fourth consecutive year at the Asian Rugby Sevens held at the Singapore Cricket Club grounds in Singapore yesterday. Sri Lanka beat third seed China 26-5 to win the title.
Japan, meanwhile, won the Cup Championship ousting fancied and hitherto unbeaten Hong Kong who had also emerged victorious in all three previous legs of this four-legged tournament.
Sri Lanka had won the Plate Championships earlier at Shanghai Sevens and Mumbai Sevens in the Asian Sevens Championships 2012.
Sri Lanka collected 26 points with three goals and a try while China managed to score a solitary try. Sri Lanka led at the half time with scores of 21-5.
The championship being the virtual Asian qualifier for the 2013 World Cup, to be held in Moscow, Russia, made Japan, runner-up Hong Kong and third place winner Philippines get through as the eventual World Cup entrants.
Sri Lanka’s rugby sevens coach said, after the win, that despite losing to earn a berth in the World Cup, being able to raise the standards of the Lankan team by lifting their spirit over a night and coming this far to have won the Plate Championship was a result to be cherished.
