Four suspects arrested in connection with the killing of four men in the Poddala police area, in Galle on Saturday night, will be detained for 48 hours, according to the police.

Police Spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody said that the suspects had been produced before the Baddegama Magistrate yesterday and the court had ordered that they be detained in police custody until November 07, to probe the incident and to arrest other suspects involved.

The Island reliably learns that the quadruple killing had been an act of revenge over a long-standing feud between two villages, Dangedara and Kanampitiya. There had been six similar incidents within the space of three years and about nine persons have been killed so far.

Although the victims’ relatives and family members concealed the truth behind the killing, they themselves knew the reason behind the recent killings, as the victims of the latest slaying had been involved in the hacking to death of a businessman, Kumara Seneviratne, a fortnight ago in Galle Town, sources said.

They said that the victims were members of the warring gangs.

Police suspect that about 12 to 13 suspects may have been involved in the killing of the businessman who died after his limbs were severed in broad day light.

Police said that the other suspects involved in the recent killings had fled the area.

Investigations into the latest killings have revealed that the victims had received a telephone call asking them to come to a certain area. Therefore, police would probe the telephone calls given to the victims to nab the killers, investigators said.

The police have already noted the phone numbers of those who had spoken to them prior to their execution, according to sources.

Senior Superintendent of Police, in charge of Galle District, Vass Gunawardene told The Island that he would strengthen the security in the area to prevent further violence and expedite the investigations to bring assailants, who rocked the area, to justice.
