Thousands go hungry

There was commotion at a function at Temple Trees recently as the Health Ministry had ordered lunch only for 2,000 persons inspite of having invited 5,000 new health sector appointees to receive their appointment letters at a ceremony where President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest.

Sources said that the Health Ministry had "not expected such a large number of new appointees to attend the ceremony as on earlier occasions, most of the invitees did not turn up and and food had to be thrown away.

"We did not think most of those who were receiving appointment letters would come all the way from the North and East to attend the ceremony," a Health Ministry official said. "But almost all of them did to our surprise."

However, when time came for lunch the participants grew restless as most of them were without food. Some of them expressed their displeasure by jeering, The Island learns.
