The police are planning to grill 10 to 12 Welikada Prisons jailers over their alleged links to the inmates who organised last Friday’s riot.
Evidence of their links with the inmates had been ascertained by checking the numbers retrieved from the SIM cards of the phones used by the inmates, recovered during Friday’s search operations, police said yesterday.
Some of the recovered phones had been used by the inmates who died in Friday’s shooting.
The SIM cards have revealed several phone numbers belonging to politicians too, a senior police officer said.
Some of the jailers had been supplying mobile phones, drugs and other banned items to the prisoners, he said.
The exact number of prisoners that escaped could not be revealed, he said adding that five persons had been traced from various places and arrested. The number of firearms stolen from the prisons armoury, too, had not been publicised due to security reasons.
Meanwhile, police on Monday night traced an escapee by the name H. Thushan from Ruwanwella. He is a suspect in a murder that took place in Madiwela sometimes back, police said adding that investigations were continuing.
