Sixty-five per cent of the deaths in Sri Lankan hospitals deaths are due to non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, respiratory tract complications and kidney failure.

To check the alarming rise of NCDs, 556 Healthy Lifestyle Centres have been set up by the Health Ministry.

Additional Secretary to the Health Ministry Dr. Palitha Maheepala said that the time had come to raise public awareness of the unhealthy lifestyles which were injurious to people’s health. The principal goal of those centres would be to screen and advise the people on healthy lifestyles to arrest the high incidence of NCDs.

Dr. Maheepala said that another 250 Healthy Lifestyle Centres would be opened country-wide next year. All Provincial Health Directors and the Regional Health Directors had been directed to maintain regular stocks of 16 kinds of drugs required by NCD patients, he added.
