Dilrukshi, Charith improve on national records

Sri Lanka Army Athletics Championship

by Reemus Fernando

Champika Dilrukshi improved on the women’s 1,500 metres national record for the second time in five months, as she won the gold in a time of four minutes 16.42 seconds at the Sri Lanka Army Athletics Championship, which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium, on Thursday.

Dilrukshi’s notable performance in the 1,500 metres came just four days after she improved on the national record in the women’s 800 metres at the National Athletics Championship, at the same venue. She faced hardly any competition. Her closest rival finished nearly a minute after she crossed the line.

Her time of two minutes 06.01 seconds in the women’s 800 metres is a new meet record.

Charith Kapukotuwa also improved his own national mark with a throw of 50.44 metres in the men’s hammer throw. Kapukotuwa improved on his previous mark by more than three metres.

Kapukotuwa also bettered the meet record in the men’s shot putt, with a throw of 15.8 metres.
