Health Ministry dispatches another medical team

Baffling allergic reaction:

The Health Ministry dispatched a team of dermatologists to Gamopola in order to ascertain what had caused a large number of school children to develop an allergic reaction.


The Health Ministry spokesman said the two teams would work in collaboration with the medical experts in the central province to identify the cause of allergic reaction. He said the first team had been deployed when over 1,000 students from Jinaraja Balika Vidyalaya were admitted to the Gampola Base Hospital on Wednesday (14) with dizziness, skin eruptions and nausea. More students from Panwilatenna Maha Vidyalaya in Gampola, Weligepola Walagamba Vidyalaya, in Balangoda and Nugawela Boys School, Kandy had also been admitted with similar symptoms.


The teams would conduct investigations to find out whether the allergic condition had been caused by food, chemical reactions the air or if the situation was psychological, he said.


Approximately 40 students of the Gampola - Panwilathenna Maha Vidyalaya were admitted to the Panwilathenna Rural Hospital on Thursday (15) with symptoms of an allergy. Director of the Panwilathenna Rural Hospital Dr. Anura Dias said that by last morning three out of the eight students had been discharged. Only eight had developed serious allergic symptoms while others were treated at the OPD and kept under observation for five hours before being discharged, he said.


Meanwhile 70 students from Weligepola Walagamba Vidyalaya and 200 students from the Nugawela Boys’ school in Kandy were also rushed to hospital with similar symptoms.
