Millers ‘conspire’ to jack up rice prices

By Lal Gunesekera

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade has received information that rice millers are planning to jack up the price of a kilo of rice by Rs. 5.

A ministry source said that they had received a confidential report that the millers met in Eppawela and decided to retain their stocks to force the government to release its buffer stocks into the market.

He said that Minister Johnston Fernando had called for an immediate investigation and report from the Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Rumy Marzook.

The maximum controlled price for samba is Rs. 70 a kilo, Rs. 60 for nadu, red raw rice and white raw rice.
