Coconuts dashed as CJ goes to parliament

Coconuts were dashed on the road near the Bo-tree, at the gateway leading to the Superior Courts Complex, as the limousine taking the Chief Justice, Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, left for the Parliamentary complex, at Sri Jayewardenepura. The Chief Justice was on her way to parliament to answer summons by the Parliamentary Select Committee.

She took the public pathway yesterday, while the Justice of the Upper Courts generally use a side gate to enter and leave the complex. They generally use a special doorway after alighting from their motorcade, but yesterday, the CJ used the common doorway used by the people. A group of lawyers, gathered about the place and shouted in Sinhala, ‘Curse the Parliamentary select committee, cheers to the Chief Justice.

The cracked coconuts were later picked up by the needy in Gunny bags, and probably taken away for consumption.

The CJ left Hulftsdorp around 9.15 a.m. The select committee was scheduled to convene at 10.30 a.m.

The Chief Justice returned around 1.30 in the afternoon and was greeted by a crowd of well-wishers at the entrance.
