November 24, 2012, 6:39 pmBy Franklin R. Satyapalan
There is no obstacle to the public of Jaffna celebrating the ‘Hindu Karthikai Deepam’ festival by lighting oil lamps or engaging in religious activities in kovils on November 27 (Poya day) or a day earlier, DIG (Jaffna) Eric Perera said yesterday.
He dismissed some media reports attributed to him that the Jaffna public could celebrate the LTTE ‘Mahaweerar Naal’ (Great Heroes Day), which incidentally falls on the Poya day. Karthikai Deepam is a festival of lights and traditional oil lamps are lit in Hindu houses after sunset as they believe that these lamps protect them from evil forces On this day sisters pray for their brothers.
