LRH without permanent head for past two years

The Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH), which has 1,300 beds, 500 doctors has been without a permanent Senior Medical Administrator for the past two years.

Dr. Ratnasiri Hewage, who assumed duties from the then Hospital Director, Dr. Mahanama Rajamanthri, two years ago has been acting ever since. In addition, two Deputy Directors’ positions have remained vacant.

In accordance with the rules and regulations of the Hospitals Act, to become a senior hospital administrator, a doctor has to serve as a deputy medical administrator for three years.

When contacted, Secretary to the Health Ministry Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka said that around 36 vacancies, in the senior medical administrator category, had not been filled.

"At the moment we have 100 deputy administrators, but they have not completed three years. I had a discussion with the Public Service Commission last week. The PSC agreed to fill all the senior administrator and deputy administrator vacancies in Oct. 2013. I find no administrative lapses in the LRH," Dr. Jayathilaka said.

LRH Director Dr. Ratnasiri Hewage, when contacted, said that he had taken over duties from the then Director Dr. Rajamanthri two years back.
